Tan Drops are a Thing: My Quest to Find a Sunless Tan

Pre-Mama = Sun Worshipper

Are there any other Mamas out there who feel like their skin looks better as you’ve gotten older… or is that just me? I’m not bragging, I was actually going to make a joke about how since I’ve had babies, my face has rarely seen the sun and that’s why it looks healthier. On those beautiful days where the sin is shining and it’s the perfect day for a bronzed, sun-kissed glow, I’m stuck in the shade with SPF all over my hands trying to keep little ones out of the sun. On another note, is there anything cuter than babies in little sun hats? These are both from Kickee Pants and I swear by them! They are literally the perfect, lightweight, breathable, and SOFT hats for those little round, new and un-sun-touched noggins.

Needless to say, I have been doing some thinking about going back to my Sunny roots. NO! not the tanning booth. I remember the last time I went to the dermatologist for my yearly scan. I have a mole, Ahem! down there, and the only reason it’s there is because of my late teen and early twenties daily bout with the booth. I was tan, yes, but now, it’s embarrassing! He has to call the nurse in every year when they look over my unmentionables. Jeesh!

The Quest

So in my quest to find some tanning alternatives, I discovered TAN DROPS. Mamas, you put this stuff right into your daily moisturizer! I would have just used tan towels or foam, but I hate the smell. I did a little digging, though, and if you’ve been reading the blog at all you know that I am always looking for safer alternatives and healthier choices with products I use on my skin and my babies’ skin. Here’s the breakdown of what I found in terms of safer Tan Drops and Lotion–I used both EWG & Think Dirty Apps when I did my research.

The Products

Think Dirty App Shows Toxicity Level

1: Vita Liberata Advanced Organics Self Tanning Anti Age Serum: $27.49 with Prime Membership

This was rated a 0 on the Think Dirty Scale (isn’t on EWG yet). Mix 2-3 drops with your moisturizer and voila! A nice, safe, healthy glow! I was drawn to this one from the start! When I first put it in I noticed immediately, that it does NOT carry the “smell” of self-tanner. I am not a fan of that smell, which is why I haven’t used any of these products for a long time. This one is a winner!

Tanning Lotion mixed with Baby Oil

2: Beauty by Earth Self Tanner: $28.49 with Prime membership

This lotion is rated a 1 on the EWG Skin Deep App and you can buy it on Amazon!  Recommended usage by a Band of Mamas user: Christina Rymer said, “Mix your lotion with Beautycounter Baby soothing oil (which I put on my kids’ faces every single night and is an EWG verified product) for an even application.”

3: Tropic Sun Drops Gradual Tanning Facial Serum $24.59

This one is rated a 2 on the EWG Skin Deep App and is also one you would mix a few drops into your moisturizer. The only downfall is that it comes from Europe, so you pay $20 Euro in shipping. My suggestion would be to find a friend and buy a few bottles and split the cost. The reviews are incredible, this one is high on my list to try!

4: NKD SKN Gradual Glow Daily Tan Moisturizer: $14.95 with Amazon Prime Membership

This one is an Amazon’s Choice product. The majority of the reviews say this is an excellent choice, has little smell, and works quickly. This one is also ranked a 0 on the Think Dirty App! Cheap and safe–the perfect combo.

Thinking Safer

There are SO many products out there that I am sure work great. However, when I started with cost (let’s be honest, I was thinkin’ cheap!), some of the cheapest ones that came up first in my search were packed full of harmful chemicals. No thanks! I’ll spend a few extra $10 (skip a few Starbucks?) to protect my face from the sun and the *ish in some of those products.

If you haven’t yet, download the Think Dirty App and/or the EWG Skin Deep App and do some reading before you buy products for yourself and your family! There’s never a better time to protect yourself if you know there are safer alternatives out there!
